A handy reference list for Maryland’s tourism marketing partners

American Bus Association (ABA)*

ABA represents approximately 1,000 motorcoach and tour companies in US and Canada. Its members operate charter, tour, regular route, airport express, special operations and contract services (commuter, school, transit). Another 2,800 member organizations represent the travel and tourism industry and suppliers of bus products and services who work in partnership with the North American motorcoach industry. Annual membership cost ranges from $475 to $1,250 depending on number of locations. ABA Marketplace offers pre-scheduled 7-minute appointments with operators. Annual conference fee for 2014 is $1,345 per delegate. ABA publishes and offers several advertising opportunities in Destinations magazine and ABA Motorcoach Marketer (membership directory).

International Motorcoach Group (IMG)*

Approximately 50 motorcoach operator/shareholders are active in this travel industry marketing consortium. Every supplier member must be invited by IMG or a member operator. Operator/Shareholders are voted in unanimously by the other members after meeting a list of standards. An annual conference known as the Strategic Alliance Meeting includes a one-on-one sales sessions. Attendance includes members and limited supplier guests who are invited by the operator companies.

National Association of Motorcoach Operators

Organization is made up of a number of small minority-owned motorcoach operators. Their goal is to develop and strengthen its members through networking and collaboration. The also help set standards of superior service throughout the motorcoach industry.

National Tour Association (NTA)*

NTA buyer members are tour operators and tour packagers who buy and package travel product from around the world. They offer two seller memberships: Tour Supplier members include hotels, attractions, restaurants, cruise lines, receptive operators and transportation companies; and Destination Supplier members for convention and visitor bureaus and state DMOs. Members are eligible to attend the Annual Marketplace including seminars and the Travel Exchange, which offer pre-scheduled appointments with tour operators. The registration for 2013 was $1,200. They publishes Courier magazine and tour supplier/DMO member directory.

Receptive Services Association of America (RSAA)*

A non-profit trade association whose members include major inbound receptive tour operators and suppliers who contract with overseas tour wholesalers to provide tourist services throughout the US for their groups and FIT travelers from abroad. The mission of RSAA is helping receptive operators serve international tour companies through partnerships with North American suppliers.

Student & Youth Travel Association of North America (SYTA)*

SYTA is the non-profit, professional trade association that promotes student and youth travel and seeks to foster integrity and professionalism among student and youth travel service providers. SYTA members are tour operators, travel agencies and supplier organizations that are committed to professionalism and integrity in student and youth travel. The association publishes Teach & Travel.

Travel Alliance Partners (TAP)*

Travel Alliance Partners, LLC is a partner-owned organization of the 34 premiere tour operators in the United States and Canada. Each is a regional expert with new and unique itineraries. Each Partner operates under the highest standards for business ethics and product quality. Partners purchase products in a profitable fashion, pass the savings on to the consumers and increase market share with key suppliers. TAP partners have GUARANTEED the departures of 75 tours thorough out the world. Their unique marketplace is by invitation only and is called TAP Dance.

United Motorcoach Association (UMA)

The focus of this association is to support the bus owners and allow them to exchange information and ideas on the operations end of the business. Associate membership cost currently starts at $395 depending on sales generated. Travel Suppliers are eligible to participate in Motorcoach Expo, a “nuts & bolts” trade show. Co-located with NTA.

United States Tour Operator Association (USTOA)*

This association has an active tour operator membership of 56 which do business under 125 different brands, with an additional 717 allied and associate members. Most active members are selling to a domestic clientele. The annual meeting, for members only, includes a marketplace and advertising opportunities are available with membership.

U.S. Travel Association*

Association offers education, research and marketing opportunities. One of their programs is an international trade show held annually in North America called International Pow Wow. This trade show includes individual pre-scheduled appointments with international travel buyers throughout the world. Where 3,700 U.S. delegates meet with 1,600 international travel agents, tour operators and other travel buyers; more than 2,200 United State organizations are currently members.
